The Beginning: The Syd Barrett Era

The name Pink Floyd arose from the combination of the names of two blues musicians: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

The band began playing blues and rhythm and blues covers, but soon developed its own style, influenced by psychedelic rock and avant-garde music.

The creative leader of this stage was Syd Barrett, who composed most of the songs on the band’s first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), considered a masterpiece of psychedelic rock.

However, excessive drug use, especially LSD, affected Barrett’s mental health, and he began to show signs of schizophrenia and exhibit erratic and unpredictable behavior.

In 1968, the band decided to add David Gilmour (guitar and vocals) as a fifth member, to replace Barrett in live performances.

Finally, Barrett was expelled from the band that same year, after participating only in a few songs on the second album, A Saucerful of Secrets (1968).

Consolidation: the era of Roger Waters

After Barrett’s departure, Pink Floyd entered a period of transition, in which it explored various musical genres, such as folk, jazz, electronic music and classical music.

The band also began to compose concept albums, that is, albums that tell a story or have a unified theme. Some examples are

  • Ummagumma (1969),
  • Atom Heart Mother (1970), and
  • Meddle (1971).

At this time, the band’s main composer and lyricist was Roger Waters, who assumed the role of leader and spokesperson for the group.

Waters gave a more critical and political stamp to Pink Floyd’s songs, reflecting his vision on topics such as war, capitalism, alienation and madness.

Under his direction, the band achieved its greatest commercial and artistic success with the albums

  • The Dark Side of the Moon (1973),
  • Wish You Were Here (1975),
  • Animals (1977) and
  • The Wall (1979).

These albums became classics of progressive rock and rock in general, and contain some of Pink Floyd’s most famous songs, such as

  • «Money»,
  • «Shine On You Crazy Diamond»,
  • «Dogs» and
  • «Another Brick in the Wall «.

The decline: the era of David Gilmour

The 1980s marked the beginning of Pink Floyd’s decline, due to growing tensions between the band members, especially between Waters and Gilmour.

Waters became increasingly authoritarian and controlling, which generated conflicts with the other musicians.

1983, the band released its last album with the classic lineup: The Final Cut, an album that was conceived as a solo project for Waters, but was released under the name Pink Floyd for contractual reasons.

1985, Waters announced his departure from the band, arguing that Pink Floyd was «a creatively spent force.»

Gilmour and Mason

decided to continue with the Pink Floyd name, sparking a legal battle with Waters over the rights to the name and the group’s musical catalogue.

A deal was eventually reached in 1987, which allowed Gilmour and Mason to continue using the Pink Floyd name, while Waters retained the rights to The Wall and its visuals.

The new stage of Pink Floyd was led by David Gilmour, who was in charge of the composition and production of the albums

  • A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and
  • The Division Bell (1994).

These albums were well received commercially, but were criticized for their lack of originality and innovation.

The band also went on successful world tours, which included spectacular visual and sound effects.

The band performed four songs:

  • «Breathe»,
  • «Money»,
  • «Wish You Were Here» and
  • «Comfortably Numb».

It was the first time they played together since 1981, and the last time they played with Richard Wright, who died in 2008.

2014, Pink Floyd’s last album was released: The Endless River, an album based on unreleased material recorded during The Division Bell sessions.

The album was a tribute to Wright, who is listed as a co-writer on most of the songs

. The album was well received by fans, but received mixed reviews from the specialized press.
